Let's Raise A Mug...

"Let's raise our voice...
Let's raise a flag...
Let's raise a ruckus...

Hummm.... on thinking it over...

Let's all sit down...
Let's take a break...
Let's raise a Mug!!!"

This mug is big... 4¼" across at the base... solid... a pleasure to hold in my hand... and a pleasure to cast my eyes upon...

It holds lots... a fabulous, huge mug of steaming coffee.... or a chilled, foaming mug of homemade brew... versatile in its simplicity... a pleasure to bring to my lips...

Hand-crafted... with care to... balance... proportion... function... color... design...

This mug has a wonderful large handle too... perfect for my hands to hold it very comfortably...

The actual mug that inspired me to do this watercolor has a muted earthy green glaze made by our Potter friend David Eastwood from Central Hampstead, New Brunswick.

I used varying washes of indigo... to indulge myself... in trying to do justice to a work of art our friend created...

approx. 5½" x 8" ...brush and watercolor washes on CP 140 lb. Arches WC paper

I love this drawing. Love it. I should give you my favourite cup to draw. It's green and brown and huge an perfect for a hot mug of tea.

Beautiful watercolor with great lighting! Funny how something so simple and functional can become a joy..........I just broke my favorite mug and was looking at some yesterday but they just weren't "right".....probably should make my own but am afraid I'd poison myself...we so rarely run the kiln and I never have the confidence that that little cone is telling me the truth!!!

Jazz, that is so nice of you to say.. . Thank you...
Wouldn't that be fun, an art show of paintings of peoples favourite mugs!!

................

Hi Anet, Thanks so much! We really become attached to our mugs, don't we?

Did you find any mugs or other good deals at the yard sales?...

.........................

Thank you, Sharon... Sorry your favourite broke... Hope you'll be able to find a worthy substitute!

I can just see the beauty on a mug you would create.. I'm imagining rainbow hued and melding glazes... and a very cool handle...

No mugs, but some pretty great goblets!

You paint so beautifully Gwen. My blue coffee mug would look great in a watercolour rendition by you.

In my travels around the world, I've found mugs everywhere and have always drawn and painted them. (pictures for my journal because I usually have tea as I write). But nothing as beautiful as yours, it becomes more than a mug. It's in my favourite colour too. Just wonderful Gwen.

Thanks so much Janice and Robyn. Favourite mugs are such personal objects as we touch them to our very sensitive lips...
.............

Thank you Hillary and What a great idea!! to journal all the mugs you use wherever you go... usually we all have a mug of something delicious nearby! That's perfect... I would love to see your mug drawings and paintings all gathered together.

..............

So glad you recognized them, Sherrie... I appreciate you letting me know!!!
In Nova Scotia, we supply about 15 shops scattered here and there throughout the province... Most of them for over 12 years..

We also have our work in most other provinces of Canada.. Many customers contact us from all over the world.. so lovely to talk to them and see how far our work has traveled... I never would have imagined this when we first started...

There is nothing like the feel of the lip of a hand thrown mug, and you've reminded me of it, THANK YOU! I think I need to rescue one Lesley's friend made in art school that is holding pens and pencils, though beautiful doing that, and fill myself from it instead. Now I want to wash it and take its portrait, my own ode to a mug. I leave inspired again . . .

Don you are so amusing... You must keep Ruth entertained...

Thank you, Ruth I look forward to seeing your mug profile. I know it will be a beauty!!... Most of my pencil-holding mugs have missing handles or a crack or two... But I haven't the heart to throw them away...You're lucky to have one in perfect condition!!

The mug looks monumental in this watercolor. So wonderful to be able to take an everyday object and capture its essence.

It's perfect, and intentionally handle-less!

Bill, It is rather large... sometimes common things, close to us need a second look, to remind us why we keep coming back to them........

Sounds lo-ve-ly, Ruth!

Hey Kathy, Thanks so much, Your calligraphy blows me away...

What an interesting challenge, it will take ages looking through old journals for mugs, so easy to get side tracked. I'll work on it.
Thanks Gwen.

I'm a little behind, but I love that mug. At first I thought it was a pewter tankard, but your description makes it sound so much more original than that.

Gwen Buchanan said...

Sanna,Another friend of ours has a wonderful collection of pewter tankards.. Now they really feel great on a hot day with a chilled drink... and no worry of them breaking!
