 Reach... Gwen Buchanan

"Ah, but a man's REACH should exceed his grasp,
Or what's a Heaven for?
from Andrea Del Sarto  by Robert Browning... 1812-1889

The ring in the drawing is known as  "the Goddess"..
I made it from Silver and Copper years ago.. it's my favourite.

6" x 10", Crow quill dip pen, brush on 140 lb. watercolor paper in sketch book, india ink, sepia watercolor

...drawn at Desideratum Art and Jewelry studio, St. Martins on the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick

Wow. Inspired by your drawings, I've bought myself a crow quill dip pen.
What a beautiful quote to match the drawing.

Equally beautiful--the hand and the ring, Gwen! I love how you can really see the details of the ring in this, the gaiety of the dancing female figure. I just lately bought some india ink again and can't wait to pick this up again. Happy Day :o)

Thank you Penny and Linda... and Priya, you will love the pen, I hope... Tracy, I could not live without India Ink.. I use it for so many different things.

I find this hand terrifying.

Hey, I love that it brought a strong response, Guillaume... it may not be pretty but that's ok... 'cause art doesn't have to be pretty.. I am very much drawn to expressionism.

I love the strength in the hand and in the ring. Both hold power. A vibrant combination. I can see why the ring is your favourite. It's gorgeous.

hank you, Carol, it's really interesting to note how each one of us react to art.. as we all come from different lives, and we are the sum of our experiences therefore we will relate individually.. It is one of my favourite aspects of the whole process.

Full of character.

Thanks Louciao... you should see the real ones.. now they have character and could be mistaken for the aged work-worn hands of a fisherman who has been on the sea for 70 years..

You are a master of so many mediums, but my favorite hand so far is the one created on the brown paper. I remembered, in my younger, poorer days, when I had no art paper and used to do my drawings on brown paper bags.

Hi Jeri, I remember when I was a girl and visited my grandmother she would save all her old envelopes and slice them open for us to draw on... she would draw whimsical birds flying over hills.
But Brown paper is a great surface isn't it.. has a wonderful tooth and tone.. My son has taken a liking to working on it too with charcoal and chalk.. he recently did an amazing rabbit... when he posts it to his blog I'll put a link on my blog to it... I love it..

Just gorgeous water color/pen and ink. And the ring! A goddess on a goddess.

Hi Ruth, It would be nice if this year there was time to make more rings.. I would like that.
