Foggy Day in St. Martins

Since July was such a hot month and I have been hearing locals and visitors alike Wishing for Fog,  I thought a few pictures from the St. Martins Harbour and the shore along the Bay of Fundy on one Foggy day back in June would cool things off a bit for everybody..

It is low tide and the fishing boats are sitting in the mud.. One of the covered bridges is in the background...  there are two at the harbour... also it has a covered walkway for pedestrians with cut-out window holes.

I love when everything disappears into the fog.. now you see it... now you don't...  it's Magic.
Views like this are an Artist's Dream.... anyone living here or visiting must feel they are walking inside a Painting.

There is a wharf on either side of the harbour.

Most of these boats are scallop draggers and  I can't wait to have some fresh scallops.

Like the Boat's name, "Last Chance"... perhaps they mean it's our last chance to cool off.

As can be seen by the water marks on the wharf supports the tide has to rise more before they can go out.
6 hours in, 6 hours out.

This is The Caves, one of St. Martins landmarks, carved by the Bay of Fundy waves from the sandstone cliffs.
I was quite a distance away when I took this shot so the size of them does not appear as large as they really are.  I'll have to check for sure but I think the bluffs are 60'-75 'high plus the tall Spruce trees.
See my side bar for The Caves on a sunny day.

The incoming tide has riled up the sand and made the water look dark.

The waves are beginning to hit on the red bluffs in the background.. They aren't very high today.. last year when a big storm went through.. the waves were crashing so hard that they were splashing well over the tops of the trees on the tops of the bluffs. Everybody always heads to the shore to take pictures when that happens.. On one occasion  the waves grabbed a car and started to pull it into the surf... but luckily with some help from some bystanders and ropes they  were able to rescue it.

Heading out to a day of fishing on the Bay of Fundy

... starting to clear a bit.

I see blue skies, so another beautiful day will soon be upon us.

Sunrise and Seasmoke

...click pictures to enlarge to feel the effect and imagine looking out from high on a bluff...

The extreme cold of the night has given way to a most delicate sunrise... a little later in appearing today.... due to the mass of seasmoke rising, mounding and billowing above the surface of the Bay of Fundy...

...blocking the view of our neighboring province... Nova Scotia... 30 miles away... altogether...

To watch this happen is like receiving a gift.... from the world... such anticipation...

Light and colors changing... as... and when Nature decides...

Across the snow covered yard...

Past the village below... out into the Bay of Fundy...

The Seasmoke rises... illuminating the tidal marsh ... in various shades of beauty...

It is Glorious!............................ It is Magnificent!..........

...actually words can hardly describe the emotional response this draws forth....

It can't be packaged.... bought or sold...

It gives itself... free of charge.... to anyone who waits for it...

...or if that soul happens upon it by chance.... they will never forget it....
and they too... will become one of those who wait....

This is Mother Natures offering............ her way of saving grace when she causes us mere mortals to endure these -20C temperatures...

A Balance, I would say.....

Sea Smoke

One of the most unusual sights I have experienced since moving to the coast of the Bay of Fundy is the extravagant show the ocean puts on in the dead of winter when it gets very cold... I mean about -20 degrees Celsius or below... and calm...

It doesn't happen all the time.... just occasionally.... but when it does, be prepared to be Awestruck.

It is the natural phenomena known as "Sea smoke".

It is usually only visible in the morning as the sun begins to warm up the air... sometimes it disappears quickly & sometimes it lasts for a few hours....

The ocean never freezes... well maybe a bit along the edges at the very coldest times of year, but that doesn't count...

This phenomena occurs when the extra cold air comes in contact with the ocean that is still at its balmy year round temperature of 0 degrees Celsius/32 degrees Fahrenheit... Individual giant "Plumes" of what look like smoke, rise in gentle wafts over the ocean. It is amazing...

.... as if from below the surface, King Neptune is blowing smoke circles high up into the atmosphere.... They can rise hundreds of feet in the air where they congregate and form a huge fluffy cloud, full of light and shadow.... A sight to behold...

A reward for us stubborn people that bear the cold and live along this rugged coast all year round.

This photograph was taken from the top of our bluff in St.Martins, New Brunswick, just outside our front door.

Answers.com describes Seasmoke as........... "A form of steam fog common in coastal seas around cold land masses such as Labrador and Norway. As very cold air from the land passes over the warmer sea, it is rapidly heated. Convection currents carry moisture upwards, which quickly recondenses to form fog."
