The Book and the Mug

Read any good books lately? or possibly written... made... or altered any good books lately?

.....Such a tantalizing object... a Book...... so many emotions can be coaxed out of us ... from a book... and so many emotions can be placed into a book... by us...

John and I have wanted to make a little book for a while now...  especially after chatting with faithful customers and receiving requests at Craft Fairs for a pair of earrings with a Book and a Mug combination......

... well, finally after much thought... Sterling wire twisted and looped... textured copper... drawing many tiny pictures... cutting metal... shaping ... hammering... applying heat... then doing this from scratch, time and time again ... it took some figuring to simplify the design and finally get to the finish line... but at long last, we have a pair we really like...

The "Book and Mug" is now one of the new designs in our Whimsical Collection......

Lately we have been working in the studio many long hours... so I'm going to sit here a bit with a steaming mug of hot coffee and a good book... oh, make that a few good books...

... more of our whimsical DESIDERATUM Art Jewelry is pictured here...

Oh boy I get to be the first to comment! I LOVE them! Of course, we knew we would. I shall pick mine up as soon as is possible! Wahoo, you have made my otherwise somewhat strenuous day after working all night. Thanks Gwen & John.

You and John must have great times together creating and "arting." These earrings are really cool. Did you keep any of the trials by errors pieces? It would be interesting to see the evolution from scratces on paper to what you tried out, etc.
OK, this is sounding like I am telling you what to do!

I hope you are getting some nice weather up there!

Such a lot of thought and trial and work goes into such little things of beauty.
Where would we be without books? You can't take a computer into the woods and soak up its magic under a tree! It's just not the same as a well thumbed book.

Sorry I have not been around for a while, my follower thingy obviously neglected to function.

I'd love to see these on my wife's ears; it would remind me that sometimes she's a mystery, sometimes a thriller, sometimes a self help but it's best when she's a romance. Plus it comes with a cup of coffee.

What lovely pieces, especially the little book.

Market to book groups? I could see these dangling near our local bookstore's table with piles of books for the various local book groups. Let me know if you'd like me to go run it by them.

The design is perfect, as always. Just enough rustic charm with livable elegance.

Did I tell you I found a dress to go with my Desideratum earrings for Lesley's wedding? It has a white background with a large pastel floral print, and it will be perfect for those crystal danglies. I'm excited! Now for the shoes and a shawl . . . .

Oh, and BTW, Peter will head up the opposite coast on another gig in May: Washington state to Alaska. He gets to see Vancouver before me!

How lovely I particularly like the book, thinking two books would be nice.
But no, they are a perfect balance and a perfect match.

Hello Gwen,

Some people are just too talented! I look at your photographs, sketches, woodwork, metalwork, book making, stitching, jewellery, writing and no doubt a lot more I haven't seen yet!

I hope your new earrings sell well!

Do you remember HMV record label Gwen ? His Master's Voice?, a dog and a gramophone ? Now you don't know if the earphones are connected to an iPod or a mobile, Mobiles have music too. What do you have for music lovers ? a gramophone pendant would be a good idea. Oh yea ! take a look at the grammy award Gwen, it is a small gramophone, no dog there.
Book and a mug is a great idea Gwen.

Lovely. Books are as much aesthetic objects in themselves as they are producers of aesthetic pleasure. I don't judge a book by its cover, but it is nice when it looks nice.

Leanne Pizio said...

Oh! I love these! They are so amazing in detail. Perfect.

Gwen Buchanan said...

Oh Roxanne don't you wish you could just indulge yourself with books to your hearts content.. that's my wish... for now I just have to steal time with them.. sort of like a secret love affair...

Thank you Jo... we had great fun creating them and the best part is that even though we make quite a few of them they are all different...

Oh yes Rauf I remember that label... and that visual I loved it... we used to play a gramophone at my uncles camp and put those big think records on and wind it up .. what a fine memory!!

Hi Guillaume, I love your thoughts... and yes I get much pleasure from just gazing at a stack of them... such a tease though...

Thank you so much Leanne, they are my new favourite... I love the work you did after being inspired by your trip to England.. You are so good at what you do!!!
